Glittering Sydney NYE2016 Website Revealed

The Sydney NYE2016 website was revealed today with less than 4 months to go. It is roughly the same design as last year’s website but it incorporates this year’s artwork for the event. The event’s logo was already revealed last month when ABC announced their ‘Design Your Own Firework‘ competition in conjunction with the City Of Sydney but was very small & in low picture quality.

Now with the full, large & high quality artwork available to view, we can see it in it’s full glory. It is very glittery & features many Sydney/Australian imagery such as the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, city buildings, flora, fauna, various types of ice cream & a bicycle.

Despite more detail from the artwork, which is a strong clue to the theme of this year’s event, the updated website does not confirm the event’s theme. Where we found confirmation of last year’s theme, ‘City Of Colour‘, only had this written:

About

A special moment in time

SydNYE is a globally recognised event that lies in wait for one very special moment in time.

As anticipation builds for the clock to strike 12, it’s a destination where the people come together to elevate the city to the best version it can possibly be: connected, alive, and energised by the unlimited possibilities of a new tomorrow and the new year.

It’s a place the captures the imagination, draws us home and throws open its arms to guests from all over the world with the harbour at its heart, and enriches us all with its unique and diverse surrounds. Year after year, it is the birthplace of wondrous new memories that will stay with us for a lifetime.

This is a very elaborate explaining of what New Year’s Eve is and how special it is to celebrate it in Sydney. It may provide a clue to the theming but due to how generic it is, it should be read with caution in case there are no longer themes of the event due to possibly no more Bridge Effects.

But that shouldn’t be a reason to worry about the event’s future as most years the theme isn’t confirmed until early December. It is usually just small clues revealed until then.

The website also confirms the event program. It is roughly the same as last year but with 3 differences:

  • Welcome To Country will this year be held at 8:38pm,
  • The theme of the Welcome To Country is ‘Walking On Country‘ and,
  • The Harbour Of Light Parade will feature white ropelight

The Sydney Opera House is still a part of the Midnight Fireworks by the way.

The white ropelight of the Harbour Of Light Parade may be a small clue to the theming too – after all, the vessels are usually given a creative brief when they bid to be a part of the Parade.

Lastly, 104.1 2DayFM is confirmed to be the radio broadcaster of the 9pm Family & Midnight Fireworks soundtracks. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) television coverage will be on ABC1 while internet streaming will be via ABC iView (which I think is the 1st time in the event’s history) & again, Sydney NYE’s website (very likely to be a embed of ABC iView’s live stream).

The latter begs the question (which we won’t find out till mid-December for sure) – is Telstra no longer producing YouTube live streams? Telstra dramatically reduced it’s content in last year’s live stream and in recent months, removed archived Sydney NYE live streams – a pattern that seems to be becoming a trend.

Telstra may still be sponsoring the event in regards to the smartphone application but again, we won’t find out for sure until around early December.

More importantly for our international readers, if there is no Telstra YouTube stream, will ABC drop it’s geoblock for the night allowing viewing worldwide?

This year’s event seems to be bringing more questions than usual (and we thought last year involved a lot of speculation!).

‘Sydney Swans’ & ‘Greater Western Sydney Giants’ Light Up Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is getting into the spirit of next Saturday’s local Australian Football League (AFL) derby, with the pylons of the famous landmark to be lit with Sydney Swans & Greater Western Sydney Giants players for the coming week.

In a celebration of the 1st Sydney AFL Final to feature both local teams, the Bridge will be lit up in both those clubs’ colours every night until Friday, September 9.

The Sydney Swans & Greater Western Sydney Giants will face off in the 1st Qualifying Final next Saturday afternoon at ANZ Stadium, with the winner getting a home Preliminary Final in Sydney & a precious week off.

Lance Franklin, Dan Hannebery, Luke Parker, Jarrad McVeigh, Josh Kennedy & Kurt Tippett are star Sydney Swans to feature in the rotating images on the south pylon of the Bridge.

Callan Ward, Steve Johnson, Stephen Coniglio, Toby Greene, Jeremy Cameron & Dylan Shiel are the Greater Western Sydney Giants players who will feature on the north pylon.

Well over 40,000 tickets have already been sold for the derby, which will be the Greater Western Sydney Giants’ Finals debut.

4 spectacular new Zodiac lanterns will be part of the City Of Sydney’s 2017 Chinese New Year Festival celebrating The Year Of The Rooster.

The giant artworks, representing animal signs of the Chinese Zodiac, will join the Lunar Lanterns exhibition that featured as part of the 2016 Sydney Chinese New Year Festival, which attracted 1.3 million visitors.

The new animal lanterns – a rooster, rat, pig & snake – will be located in key locations throughout the city from the 27th of January to the 12th of February 2017.

Interactive lighting & design architects, Amigo & Amigo, will design new concepts for the rooster & snake lanterns; Chinese-Australian artist, Guo Jian, will design the rat lantern while the pig lantern will be created by Beijing-born artist & sculptor, John Deng.

“Our 1st ever Lunar Lanterns were a huge hit in 2016, attracting more than 750,000 visitors & providing more than 1000 community group members with the opportunity to perform at each lantern”

“These new lanterns will help us continue to build on what is one of the biggest & most successful Lunar New Year celebrations outside of Asia. I look forward to seeing the lantern designs by local artists”

Sydney NYE Logo Revealed As ABC Returns For 4th Consecutive Broadcast

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has been awarded the TV broadcast rights for this year’s Sydney NYE event.

This, along with this year’s Sydney NYE logo, was confirmed following the release of details for the ABC3 ‘Design Your Own Firework‘ Competition:

ABC is well-known for their 2 recent controversial broadcasts of the event in 2013 and 2014. Their 2015 broadcast, whilst surprising they got the rights for that broadcast, was a huge but not perfect improvement. The 2016 broadcast is expected to be roughly the same but we do hope for a little more enhancement of the broadcast.

Details and duration of the Sydney NYE2016 TV broadcast have not been revealed as yet but the 9pm Family Fireworks & the ABC3 ‘Design Your Own Firework‘ Competition winner have been confirmed as features of the broadcast. The Midnight Fireworks, whilst not confirmed, are all but guaranteed.

The logo of this year’s Sydney New Year’s Eve event (at top of article) was also revealed as part of the competition. The theme hasn’t been revealed yet but the logo does provide a clue. So far, it looks very similar to the artwork of last year’s ‘City Of Colour’ theme. Given we don’t know the future of the iconic Bridge Effect yet, there is a possibility the event (and hence, the themes (if any)) may become more generic in the future as a result of having no more Bridge Effects. This year’s event may be the 1st edition to have this occur but for now, we don’t know. Hopefully, the really creative, unique and constantly-changing themes of the past shall continue. And more importantly, hopefully the traditional Bridge Effect returns too!

But anyway, all that is left to be announced is the Creative Ambassador(s), the official charity partner & the theme plus any special details about this year’s event. Can you guess who/what it will be? We’ll just have to wait & see.

Kids Have Designs On Making A Big NYE Bang!

A ‘Design Your Own Firework’ competition will put 1 lucky child centre stage at the world’s most spectacular fireworks display, when they see their very own firework design light up Sydney Harbour on New Year’s Eve.

The lucky winner of the prize of a lifetime will also get to be part of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) broadcast, pushing the ‘start button’ on the 9pm Family Fireworks display that will feature their unique firework design.

Created by the City of Sydney and ABC3, the Design Your Own Firework competition is open to Aussie children aged 16 years and under. The competition opens for entry on Monday 15 August.

ABC Director of Television, Richard Finlayson, said: “New Year’s Eve is such a special moment in the year and we’re always thrilled to share with millions of viewers around the country through ABC TV.

“It’s particularly wonderful to have the involvement of younger Australians with this terrific competition to create their own ideas for the NYE fireworks. It’s a great opportunity for Aussie chidren to watch, learn, create and celebrate together. We look forward to seeing some spectacular entries, as well as sharing New Year’s Eve with audiences of all ages once again,” Mr Finlayson said.

City of Sydney CEO, Monica Barone, said the competition was a wonderful opportunity for a budding young artist to join a very special night.

“To be part of Australia’s biggest public event that’s watched by millions of people around the world is truly something special. I’m delighted we are able to be part of this unique competition for Australian kids.”

To enter, kids are invited to let their imagination explode and draw a unique firework design. The design demonstrating the most creativity, effort and potential to be reproduced as a fireworks display, will be announced the winner.

The winner will receive a trip to Sydney for a family of four that includes tickets to the Sydney New Year’s Eve official Dawes Point viewing area and the chance to be part of the live ABC NYE broadcast at 9pm.

The winning design will be brought to life by Foti International Fireworks, the company that has delivered Sydney’s spectacular New Year’s Eve displays since 1997. Master pyrotechnician Fortunato Foti says bringing a child’s firework design to life is an exciting challenge.

“It’s not everyday you get to design a new and original fireworks display, and I love seeing what kids’ imaginations come up with,” said Mr Foti.

His advice to would-be firework designers is to look at the sky as a blank canvas.

“Think about your fireworks having different sizes and dimensions to use up the whole of the sky and create layers of effects. We’ve got no shortage of colours too – from bolds to pastels and gold and glitter, we’ve got a big colour palette to choose from.”

How to enter:

  • Put your grand idea down on paper
  • Add colour to your design to bring it to life
  • Upload your entry by the 5pm (AEST) 29 September
  • Check out our easy step-by-step guide and uploade your entry at www.abc.net.au/nye

Entries open on Monday 15 August and close 5pm (AEST) Monday 29 August. You must be under 16 years of age to enter.
